Vado Ligure

The plan for the construction of a multipurpose platform in Vado Ligure rose from the convergence between the interest of public bodies and private operators in the expansion of the port and in the development of port traffic.

The work will be realised through project finance, with an investment of € 450 million (300 earmarked by the State and 150 by the work promoter, i.e. the syndicate of companies formed by APM Maersk, Grandi Lavori Fincosit and Technital).

The platform will extend on a surface of 210,000 m2 and will provide a container terminal with a 700-mt-long rectilinear quay and two high-water-depth berths: one at the root of the pier (depth: 15,00 m) and the other one at the head (depth: 20,00 m).

The natural deep waters (a distinctive feature of Savona-Vado harbour, if compared to the other ports in the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea) will allow even the last-generation container vessels, with a capacity of more than 12,000 TEU, to moor safely.

The expected traffic volume ranges between 720,000 and 860,000 TEU per year, which would allow the port of Savona-Vado to exceed the one-million TEU threshold.

Once unloaded, the cargo must be efficiently processed: to this purpose, a dedicated road system and a new tollbooth will be realised.  The most important challenge, however, is represented by the railway transport: 40% of the containers handled in the new terminal will be forwarded from the port by rail, thanks to the rail shuttle service devised by the Port Authority.

The start of operations is scheduled for the spring of 2018.
