Looking at the future, the main development opportunities involve the Vado harbour, where a multipurpose platform will be constructed (works will start in summer 2009): it will host the new container terminal and, on its edge, the dry and liquid bulk unloading plants which today operate on jetties.
The container terminal (yearly capacity: 720,000 TEU) will have a 700 m quay with draught from 15 up to 22 meters, thus allowing the berthing of the ultra large container carriers with a capacity of more than 12,000 TEUs, a unique feature in the North Mediterranean Sea.
AP Moeller Maersk, the world leading Group in maritime container transport, won the European call for tenders published by the Port Authority for the realization and management of the terminal on a 50 year-lease. The new terminal will be fully operating in 2012.
As regards the port of Savona, the port masterplan outlines the concentration of cargo activities in the port area farthest from the town, where will be realized a land reclamation outside the current port breakwater a 80,000 m² surface with deep water berths.
Furthermore, the Port Authority has launched a wide investment programme for the re-organisation and development of the existing dry bulk facilities, both in the basin of Savona and Vado Ligure. |
