The Port Masterplan

In the last years, the port of Savona Vado has been living a period of important changes.
The work programmes scheduled since 1995 (year of the institution of the Port Authority) have been carried out and the development guidelines for the future of the port and the city have been traced.
The most important step in this direction is the definition of the new port Masterplan, recently approved by the Ministry.
The Masterplan aims at some key targets:

  • the development of the commercial function, improving the present port activities and creating opportunities for the settlement of new operators
  • the development of the tourist function: cruises and pleasure boating
  • the development of port-city relations, improving the compatibility between port and urban activities and setting off the most valuable areas
  • the improvement of port logistics through the reorganisation of the transport network.
The financial resources that will flow to Savona and Vado for the realisation of the plan can be estimated in 300 million Euros. The new activities are expected to foster employment by not less than 500 direct units, plus a similar number in the sideline business sectors.

Basin of Savona

As far as the port of Savona is concerned, the Masterplan proposes the reorganisation of the existing areas and the improvement of the port road system.

Through a filling beside the breakwater, a new 80,000 m² area and two berths dedicated to general cargo will be obtained, allowing the construction of a 15,000 m² covered warehouse.

The whole port access system will be rearranged, in order to reduce the impact of port traffic on the town: the port gates, truck service facilities and parking slots will be located on a new reclaim area, on the edge of the port; in addition, new road connections will be realized with the aim of separating the traffic flows directed to the cargo, cruise and urban part of the port.

Several projects concern pleasure boating: the upgrading of the Miramare area, where the shipyards today operating on Calata delle Vele, beside the Cruise Terminal, will be transferred; the expansion of the North East area of the port, dedicated to shipyards and specialised craftsmanship; the realisation of the Margonara marina, right at the mouth of the port.

Finally, several projects will be carried out to set off the historical, architectural and environmental features of the area surrounding the ancient Priamar fortress, favouring the development of new urban functions.

Basin of Vado Ligure

The favourable position of the port of Vado, distant from the city centre, and its efficient multimodal connection to the transport network, allow the Port Authority to plan a major expansion of the port structures.

The main project consists in the construction of a 250,000 m² multipurpose platform, destined to the reorganisation of the present dry and liquid bulk terminals and, above all, to the realisation of a new container terminal.

The container terminal will have a total surface of 200,000 m² and a 700 m quay, with a draught between 15 and 20 m. Two berths will be dedicated to dry and liquid bulk unloading plants, linked to storage areas on-shore by conveyor belts and pipelines respectively.

In order to protect the new quays and ensure the nautical accessibility of the port, a new breakwater will be built, and a Ro-Ro quay will be realised at its root.

The whole port road system will be reorganised: a new Customs gate will be located behind the port and two independent road axis will lead to the existing port area and to the new multipurpose platform.

Furthermore, the direct connection between the ferry terminal and the “Aurelia” road will be improved, while the completion of the “Aurelia bis” by pass road will grant a direct access to the new leisure area to be realised between the western edge of the port and the Bergeggi beaches.

Finally, following an agreement between the Port Authority and the Municipality of Vado Ligure, a green area will be realised granting the sustainability of the operating asset of the port and protecting the quality of urban activities behind the port.
