An innovative plan for an integrated
logistic system
Considering the port trades growth prospects, which
are linked to the terminals commercial activities over the short-term and
to the implementation of the new Port Master Plan over the medium-term, an
efficient integration between the port and the hinterland areas is a remarkable
factor in order to offer all the necessary logistic systems (from prolonged
storage to handling and initial processing), even outside the port domain,
and to guarantee in the meantime a rapid goods forwarding to their destination
markets.
In the district of Savona, outside the port areas,
there are a lot of available areas for logistics and distribution: Vado
Ligure and the Valbormida, located in the hinterland behind Savona.
Considering that they were once thriving industrial sites, the district maintains
important road and railway connection infrastructures, nowadays under-utilized.
The Port Authority of Savona has developed an innovative
plan that is supposed to involve both public and private logistic and railway
operators. The project aims at integrating in one multimodal system the various
land transport channels serving the port: motorways, railway and cableway.
The first step will be the activation of a shuttle linking from the port towards
the rail yards where the trains pass on to the “net” operators.
The Port Authority will care about the purchase of traction vehicles dedicated
to the shuttle service, while the works for port railway plants improvement
are already in progress.
Always in the field of the logistic services, we
cannot help mentioning the Airport in Villanova d’Albenga, built in
1922 in the only one enough wide flat area in the region and located at about
40 Km from the port of Savona. The airport, widely open to the international
trade activity, is characterized by the all-year-round favourable meteorological
conditions and by the geographical position near the main localities of the
Riviera and at less than 100 km from the French border.
